There is a direct link between two identical tiles.

We can click and eliminate this pair since no other tile is between them.

If another tile is between two identical tiles, we cannot eleminate this pair.

One turn is allowed to link two tiles.

There's a tile between this one-turn link.

So these two tiles can not be linked.

Two-turn link is also allowed.

The link can be outside the board.

This is an invalid two-turn link because there is another tile in between the link.
